GEM4 Ecosystems & Natural Resources

GEM Joint Master programme

Erasmus+ MSc in geo-information science and Earth observation for environmental modelling and management

Environmental issues dominate the international agenda with urgent action needed to conserve biodiversity, develop and adopt sustainable agricultural practices and reduce and even reverse deforestation. Policymakers have an increasing need for spatial information on environmental and socio-ecological systems to understand rapid changes in ecosystems and the natural resources they provide.

Forestry, protected area monitoring and the environmental health of natural ecosystems is a rapidly growing area where Earth observation and spatial modelling are essential tools.  These tools are clearly demonstrating their importance for quantifying the trends, conditions, and value of natural and managed ecosystems.

The rapid expansion of open-access Earth observation data, the use of UAVs, novel sensor networks and citizen science all provide a rich source of technology to better monitor and manage natural resources.
