Finances
The deadline for applications from self-financed students is the same as for all applications to GEM. See the application page for the exact deadlines.
After you have submitted your application and your application has been assessed as academically acceptable by the GEM consortium, you will receive an invoice automatically for the tuition fee.
If you require a full invoice of these total costs, for instance, for an alternative scholarship provider, please contact us at gem-msc-itc@utwente.nl.
To determine what tuition fee you have to pay, you need to check which countries are considered EU Member States and third countries associated to the Programme (EU) or not according to the European Commission:
Programme Countries | Partner Countries |
---|---|
Member States of the European Union (EU): Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden. | ALL OTHER COUNTRIES |
Third countries associated to the Programme: North Macedonia, Serbia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Türkiye. |
|
Important Note: A non-EU applicant cannot have lived in an EU Country for 12 or more months in the past 5 years (otherwise the applicant would be categorised as an applicant from an EU Country).
In addition to a budget for tuition fees, you will also need a budget for housing, day-to-day expenses, and costs may also occur for insurance and a visa application.
Below you will find a table with a cost estimation for self-funded students
Cost estimation for self-funded students | Partner Countries | Programme Countries |
---|---|---|
Tuition fee whole course 24 months | 18,000 | 5,000 |
Estimated additional costs (visa, residence permit, sundry costs such as passport photos, smart card, and deposit) | 400 | 400 |
Estimated living allowance for 24 months (incl. housing)
| 30,000 | 30,000 |
Estimated total costs | 48,400 | 35,400 |
Important notes:
- Fees are in euros and are subject to change.
- Living expenses are estimated at approximately € 1250 per month, but may be slightly higher or lower depending on the country where you study. The living expenses for the non-EU students are based on the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). For EU students, as the applicant is an EU resident, there is no need to meet the IND requirements. Therefore, the amount is an estimation of monthly living costs, we refer you to our Student Information page, where you may find information about the living costs per partner country
- Students are responsible for: Covering their own travel expenses, including international, local, and inter-European travel, and the cost of a personal laptop.
- The following costs are included in the tuition fee: Fieldwork and field trips, Health insurance
Payment conditions
After you have submitted your application and your application has been assessed to be academically acceptable by the GEM Joint Programme Board, you will automatically receive an invoice to pay the tuition fee. (The payments of the remaining costs, as indicated in the estimated costs overview in the table above, are your own responsibility.)
The tuition fee can be paid in installments.
Applicants may request to pay the tuition fee (i.e. the full amounts shown on the invoice) in two equal annual instalments.
The payment table in these cases is as follows
Payment 1 | Due date | Payment 2 | Due date |
---|---|---|---|
50% of total costs | 1 June 2026 | 50% of total costs | 1 May 2027 |
Failure to pay the fee instalment by the stated deadline will be considered grounds for non-registration for the forthcoming academic year.
Funding opportunities
Candidates who wish to apply for scholarships (for example, World Bank, etc.) may have to observe early deadlines and hence an early application is recommended.
We recommend to apply to GEM at least eight weeks before the scholarship application deadline, as a (conditional) admission letter is needed to apply for a scholarship.
Some scholarship options can be found below from the different partner universities but note that each scholarship provider has its own requirements and may not necessarily be suitable for you/your study.
Options suggested by University of Twente
Options suggested by the University of Tartu
Options suggested by Lund University
We strongly recommend:
- To check the funding options in your own country.
- Search for possibilities to get a student loan
- Check with your employer what the options and requirements are to receive funding from your organization.

Erasmus+ Scholarships
We have 70 scholarships to disburse across four intakes. 50 of these are available for all applicants, and 20 are designated as additional scholarships for specific regions (see below). For the 2026-28 intake we have 17 or 18 Erasmus+ scholarships. This means that we will have four or five scholarships per track per intake.
As the competition for Erasmus+ scholarships is very high, we strongly encourage applicants to also explore alternative funding opportunities to support their participation in the GEM programme.
All applicants who submit a complete application before the deadline (15 January 2026 at 23.59 CET) are automatically considered for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) scholarship, funded by the European Union.
Notification timeline: Applicants who have applied for an Erasmus+ scholarship will be provisionally notified of the outcome by 31 March 2026.
