Before your application

Prepare your application

Before filling in the application form:

  1. Note that if you apply to the GEM Programme before the deadline of 15 January 2026, you will automatically apply for the Erasmus+ Scholarship.
  2. Each partner may have a maximum number of students that can be accepted to the GEM Programme[NA6] ; if the courses are full, we are not able to accept you into the course.  You are officially accepted to the course if we have received the first instalment, full payment of the tuition fee or proof that you have received funding for the course.
  3. If you plan to apply for a scholarship, apply at least eight weeks before the scholarship application deadline, as a (conditional) admission letter is needed to apply for a scholarship.
  4. Check if you are eligible to apply on this page.
  5. Choose the study track of your choice on our Programme Structure page. We evaluate applications based on your suitability for the chosen track: Track 1: Geospatial Planner, Track 2: Geospatial Analyst, Track 3: Geospatial Developer, Track 4: Geospatial Modeller.
  6. It is not permitted to apply to multiple Tracks. You can only apply for 1 track.
  7. It is not permitted to change tracks once you are accepted to the course.
  8. To determine what tuition fee you are required to pay, you have to determine if you are from an EU Member State or 3rd country (EU). More information can be found here.
  9. We need all documents before the deadline mentioned on the home page or application page.
  10.  We do not charge admission fees; applying is free of charge.
  11.  We evaluate applications based on your suitability for the chosen track.
  12.  Do not upload articles or study guides.

Additional support for students with disabilities

The GEM Consortium is committed to ensuring equal access and opportunities for students from all backgrounds. We actively support the participation of students with long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments, whether they are scholarship holders or self-financing.

Students with disabilities may be eligible for additional financial support through the Erasmus+ inclusion mechanism. This support can help cover:

To help us prepare appropriate support, we will ask applicants to indicate any special needs when accepted to the programme. If selected, you will be contacted to:

  1. Upload relevant documentation, such as medical certificates, if applying for inclusion support.
  2. Discuss your needs confidentially with the programme coordinator to arrange suitable accommodations.

We are committed to creating an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.

Required Documentation

Below is a summary of the documents that you will need to upload to the Application Portal when applying for the course

Make sure you have all these documents ready to upload before you apply.

  1. A bachelor’s degree certificate or an equivalent qualification certificate. Applicants need to have a first or upper second class (2.1) BSc Honours degree, or equivalent, from a recognized university.
  2. An official transcript of records or a preliminary transcript of records in English.
  3. A certified official translation of your bachelor’s degree certificate and transcript of records if not in English.
  4. An official English test score result according to the entry requirements, which can be found here. **
  5. An additional Higher Degree certificate, transcript, and official translation (if applicable).
  6. A valid international passport.
  7. A Curriculum vitae (CV) created through Europass. Your CV should highlight relevant academic achievements, international experience, language skills, and personal qualities that align with the program's goals.
  8. Financial plan: We are interested to know how you intend to finance your studies in the coming 2 academic years, since the number of Erasmus+ Scholarships is limited.  To answer the questions concerning your financial situation, state the values in Euros (€), not in your own currency. You can convert your currency at this website.

** Ensure you have obtained a valid English test result before the application deadline. If your application is accompanied by a language test score report with a test date after our application deadline, we will NOT process it. Therefore, make sure to do the test in advance, as it will take time for you to get the official certificate.

On the University of Twente website, you can find example documents so that you can check the type of document we request from you. Please submit these documents digitally. If any hardcopy documents are required from you, our Admission Office will notify you and tell you where to send them.

After your application

Selection Procedure

The GEM Joint Programme Board, composed of the four degree-awarding partners, is responsible for selecting students based on merit and equity considerations. The process follows established practices to ensure fairness, transparency, and excellence.

1. Initial screening. The programme coordinator (ITC) verifies application completeness and eligibility, and applications undergo a plagiarism check through Turnitin. If doubts arise regarding the applicant’s educational background, their degree is verified through the UK NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre) database. Applications are grouped into four categories (a), (b), (c), and (d):

a) Rejected outright (e.g. due to missing English language qualifications or degree forgery).

b) Below average.

c) Average.

d) Above average.

Applicants in the eligible categories (groups b-d) receive a provisional acceptance letter and invoice, allowing them to seek alternative funding or self-finance.

Erasmus+ Scholarship Selection procedure

1. Applicant overview. After the application deadline, ITC prepares a summary of all eligible applications and shares it with the consortium partners.

2. Partner evaluation. Each partner independently reviews all the applications and ranks them by E+ region using a decision matrix. Academic criteria are weighted more heavily to generate an overall score. The criteria are:

3. Conflict of interest checks. Applications are flagged for conflicts of interest (e.g. ties to selection committee members) and addressed per EU regulations.

4. Rank compilation and selection meeting. Partners submit ranked lists to ITC, which compiles an overall ranking ready for the selection meeting. During the selection meeting (via MS Teams or in-person), the highest-ranked applicants per track are discussed and shortlisted. Selection staff access applicant documents through a secure system. Potential conflicts of interest are resolved by selecting alternative candidates where necessary.

5. After the selection of the scholarships is determined, all applicants are informed about the outcome: Selected, Placed on a reserve list and Rejected for an Erasmus+ Scholarship.

The applicants who are placed on the reserve list will be on this list until the start of the intake in August/September of the same year.

After being accepted

Certified copies of your documents

Please note that European law also requires you to send certified hardcopy documents to the Admission Office by regular post. AFTER you have paid the invoice or received a scholarship, you will be informed about this process. All information on how to provide these documents will be sent to you via email once you have been accepted.

(*) A certified photocopy is a hard copy with an official stamp and signature on each page (if applicable, also on the reverse side) to verify that it is a true photocopy of the original document. This official stamp and signature may be from a notary, your school or university. Photocopies or scans of the documents mentioned above are not legal proof, and therefore, they cannot be accepted for enrolment. All documents submitted become the property of the University of Twente and will not be returned to you.
